DIOCESE Praying Together: The Day of Pentecost

Father, as we remember your Holy Spirit

being poured out on your followers at

Pentecost, we ask for another outpouring.

Energise and revive your church by your

life-giving Spirit, and fill us with your mighty

power as we carry the good news of Jesus

Christ into our communities. Amen.

‘When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each one of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.’ Acts 2:1-4

Lord, as we come together to worship You at Pentecost, give us a vision, move us through Your Holy Spirit to bring good news to all. To bring freedom and peace to troubled people. Give us a vision that will lead us out of our comfort zone helping us to be messengers of Your love. Lord, this world is torn apart by hatred, division, conflict. May Your people throughout the world be renewed by Your Spirit to bring Your hope and peace into being.

‘Likewise, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words.’ Romans 8:26

Sometimes, Lord, it’s so difficult to know what to pray for, so thank you for giving us the power of Your Spirit to be in us to help and guide us. May we always be looking to pray as You want. Help us to be in tune with Your will, not our own. You know our weaknesses, yet still You accept us and yearn for us to seek You. We ask, Lord, that we may walk in the light of Your love.

‘But the advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.’ John 14:26

Thank you, Father, for this promise Jesus made to his disciples…as relevant for today as it was then. May the gifts Your Holy Spirit brings be seen all around. May nothing obstruct the message of Jesus. Please encourage us to trust You with all our heart, speak Your word with courage, follow You faithfully, and encourage those around us.

‘ And I will ask the Father to give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever.’ John 14:16
