DIOCESE Praying Together: Ash Wednesday

Naked we came from our mothers wombs, naked we shall depart. Merciful Lord, in our pain, anger and questions about the state of the world we have sinned against you. Father forgive us. As we set off on this journey through the wilderness, Form our character, Renew our love for You and one another. Sanctify us for your work in the world. Strengthen us to grow in faith and to direct others to You. Settle us in our promised lands that we may flourish to the glory of Your name.

Through Christ our Redeemer.

Amen.

‘Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven.’ Matt 6:19-20

Thank you Lord for this season of Lent, may we use it wisely recognising that You are the important value in our lives. Help us to weed out all those things which separate us from You and to concentrate on living life according to your decrees. We acknowledge, Father, that your desire is to walk closely with each one of your people. May we desire to walk closely with You.

‘Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.’ Romans 12:2
We pray, Father, that through Your Holy Spirit, we will set our minds on your values, that we will recognise worldly values for the fleeting gratification they give. Please, Lord, enable us to see clearly, to trust You in every circumstance, to have faith in Your word and to trust in Your mercy when we falter. May your light guide our days and your Spirit bring us peace.

‘Command those who are rich in this present world not to be arrogant or put their hope in wealth, which is so uncertain, but to put their hope in God who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment.’ 1 Tim. 6:17

Lord, as we see the devastation caused by earthquakes in Turkey & Syria, cyclones in New Zealand, war in Ukraine & countless other disasters which barely make news, may we stand in solidarity with our brothers & sisters around the world who are suffering. We pray for your comfort and healing in their lives. We pray that we who are wealthy in so many ways will give generously of time, money, aid, prayer, remembering that all we have is because of your Grace, mercy and generosity towards us.

‘The earth is the Lord’s and everything in it, the world and all who live in it.’ Psalm 24:1

In this Lent season, Father, may Your word be fruitful in bringing peace, hope and light to the world.
