PRAYERS

DIOCESE Praying Lent: Mothering Sunday

‘When he had said this, he cried with a loud voice, “Lazarus, come out!” The dead man came out, his hands and feet bound with strips of cloth, and his face wrapped in a cloth. Jesus said to them, “Unbind him, and let him go.”’
(John 11:43 NRSV)

Look …

What do you notice? What thoughts or feelings stir as you look into the face in this picture?

Wonder …

What gives you life? When were you last unbound?

Pray …

Jesus Christ, giver of life, You called us into being and you call us out of death.
We thank you for the gift of friends and family
Who help us throw off our bonds,
Who remove the stones that keep us locked in.
May we taste again the wonder of resurrection,
And may we be those who help others come back to life.

Amen.

‘I tell you that if two or three on earth agree about anything you ask for, it will be done for you by my Father in heaven. For where two or three come together in My name, there am I in the midst.’ Matt:18:19-20

Heavenly Father, we take comfort in this promise that You are with us when we pray. Lord, we may not physically always be together, but we do join to bring our prayers to You. We give thanks for all the prayers You have answered…for healing, wisdom, discernment, freedom, help in our struggles. We give You thanks for all the places where Your hand has been seen to be at work in guiding Your church, for Egypt, experiencing new freedom from oppression, for the Phillipines, for the growth of Your church in China and Iran. We pray, Lord, that Your church may continue to prosper. We pray that here in Britain, we may see a revival, that You will once again be honoured and glorified.

‘Seek ye first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things will be added unto you.’  Matt:6:33

Thank you, Lord, that You understand us so intimately. Thank you for caring about us and our everyday concerns. You are loving and compassionate and know our innermost thoughts and fears. We pray, Lord, that in these days of anxiety over everyday issues, when there are so many things to worry about in the world, that we will be able to find peace and joy in You. Help us to read your words of scripture as though You were with us. Your words offer hope, help us to focus first on You each day trusting in You to provide.

We continue to pray for peace in war zones, for relief for those suffering after the earthquakes, cyclones, floods and droughts which are shaking the earth. Lord, help us to be a positive influence on the world, not part of the problem.

Lord, your mercies are new every morning, each day is filled with possibilities, help each one of us to make the right choices. Let today be a stepping stone along our way to drawing closer to You. As each day ends, may songs of praises be sung in Your name throughout the earth.
