DIOCESE Listening and Discerning: New
Lord, our tradition tells us that you love new. Perhaps not new as in polished and untouched. Or new as in high priced. Or new as in something that has never been done before. But new as in creating something out of nothing, something out of dust, something from shortfall, something that opens, like a garden gate to a sunny meadow. Create in us a clean heart, the psalmist prayed, meaning a heart that pumps newness and freshness around our bodies, through the body of Christ, the church, and in every body we meet this week, because we are open to your newness. Re-new us we pray. Amen.

(Prayer request written by Canon Dr Neville Emslie – Canterbury Director of Mission and Ministry)

‘Praise to the name of God for ever and ever; wisdom and power are His. He gives wisdom to the wise and knowledge to the discerning. He reveals deep and hidden things; He knows what lies in darkness and light dwells with Him.’ Daniel 2:20, 21b-23

We give you our thanks and praise as we move into the new year. We thank you for all your guidance, love and comfort over the past year. We thank you for the times we have been able to rely on Your strength and Your promises. We praise you for your faithfulness to all your people. Thank you for your wisdom, mercy and compassion; your intimate knowledge of each one of us; your guidance and omnipresence.

‘He who has ears to hear, let him hear.’ Luke 14:35

We pray that, in this new year, there will be many whose hearts are ready to act upon the truth of the gospel, that the message of eternal life through Jesus will be accepted by all who hear the word. We pray especially for those who come to events around the church services. We ask that through your Holy Spirit they may be drawn to Jesus and truly hear the message of salvation.

‘He who has an ear to hear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.’ Revelation

We lift up to you the church here in Allington. As we move into a new era, may we be open to hearing what Your plan is for us. Help us to be guided by your Spirit not our own desires and plans. Give wisdom, discernment and peace to those making decisions, leading us forward, guiding the church. You, Lord, have brought us to the place we are at now, we trust You to lead us forward.

We pray for all those who are facing difficulty, distress, anxiety, those who mourn, comfort them in their time of trouble. Fill them with peace and hope. Have mercy on them.

We pray for all areas in the world where war, famine, hardship of any kind is prevalent. We ask for your peace to enter our world, bring hope. May Your kingdom come.
