DIOCESE Praying Together: Journeying through Lent

Father,
As we journey through Lent, help us to keep at the forefront of our minds that  the Lenten fast is not so much about the giving up of things we can live without but the giving of our time, money, reputation and personal comfort in the service of others. May our light shine forth to your praise and glory. We ask this in the name of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.

Amen.

‘Lord, you are my God; I will exalt you and praise your name, for in perfect faithfulness you have done wonderful things, things planned long ago.’    Isaiah 25:1

Lord God, as Isaiah praised you so long ago, so we come to you to add our praise and thanksgiving to his. We thank you for your mercy, care and compassion for all your people. Help us, during this time of Lent to reflect on your Grace to us and draw near to you, mindful of all you have done for us. We ask, Father, that you will remind us to dwell on Your kingdom, not the fleeting pleasures of the world around us.

‘Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord, Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God.’    2 Cor. 1:3-4

Lord, we pray again for all those caught up in war, the victims of the earthquakes in Turkey and Syria. We ask that they find comfort from those who have responded to your call for aid. We pray especially for those who don’t have the comfort of the knowledge of your love, be near to all the broken-hearted wherever they may be. Please draw them to You.

Father God, we know that You delight in mercy, your hand is open to all. We pray, Lord, that those who reject your mercy may think again, turn around and accept Your free gift, give them confidence to trust in You. Thank you for all who are bringing Your love to a broken world, let their work bear fruit.

‘Look to the Lord and His strength; seek His face always.’ 1 Chron. 16:11

Thank you, Lord, that we can look to you for strength. We pray for the church in Egypt…where the government is licensing new churches after so many years of persecution. Raise up leaders to disciple your people, give them strength, courage and wisdom as they move forward. We give thanks also for the President of Indonesia who has granted religious freedom. We continue to pray for Camaroon, Nigeria, D.R.Congo, Pakistan, all countries without freedom of worship. We pray that all Christians in these areas will stand firm in their faith. Please, Lord, protect them.

‘O give thanks to the Lord, for He is good; for His steadfast love endures forever.’  1 Chron. 16:34
