Weekly Update – 9th August

How do we know God exists?

Open your eyes, look around and see what He created!

 

I paraphrase, but Nicky Gumble says something along those lines in Week 6 of the Alpha Course – Why and How Should I Read the Bible? (which if you’re in church on Sunday, we will be looking at a little deeper).

But how often do we remember to ‘open our eyes’ and appreciate God’s creation?

This week Faye has been getting ready for the Environment Event that ran on Friday morning. If you take a stroll around the church garden, you’ll see evidence of this in the form of a rather magnificent Bug Hotel.

Bugs; I must admit to not being a great fan of little critters; but aren’t they wonderful; the variety, the sheer number, each having their own ‘job’ to do in the great tapestry that is life on our planet.

Our cat Merlin brought us a little critter home yesterday (bless him!), a tiny one with fur and big ears (successfully retrieved from the top of the door curtain and released back to whence he came with absolutely no shrieking from anyone present!).

I’ve become quite obsessed with fish over the past 6 months, so many different shapes, sizes and colours – a real joy to behold.

And we haven’t looked out to the horizon yet, or up to the sky

God is the Creator, we’re told this many times throughout the Bible

In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. Genesis 1:1

Wham! Slap in your face! It’s the first line, you can’t miss it!! – so why aren’t we appreciating and giving thanks at every opportunity? Of course, it’s quite probable that many of you are, and yet again it’s me that has missed the mark, having got caught up in the trivial day to day running around.

Well, no more

I’m going to stop more often

I’m going to open my eyes

And each day I’m going to give praise for all that God has created and given me

“Praise the Lord. Praise the Lord from the heavens; praise him in the heights above. Praise him, all his angels; praise him, all his heavenly hosts. Praise him, sun and moon; praise him, all you shining stars. Praise him, you highest heavens and you waters above the skies.” Psalm 148:1-4

But can you do me a favour? Remind me when I forget, again (we’re so blessed to be part of a church that can lift others up when they stumble).
